McGinty Community Food Security Fellow

(They/them)

Roo grew up in Houston, Texas but calls Durham their home more and more every day. They obtained their B.S in Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology with a minor in Botany from Colorado State University in 2022. As they continued working in the field of environmental conservation, they merged their love of plants with their passion for social justice and liberation. They have recently acquired their Masters of Environmental Management with a certificate in Community-Based Environmental Management from Duke University. They firmly believe that everyone deserves access to high quality produce and the right to live on healthy land. Their goal is to show communities just how powerful they are, especially those experiencing institutional oppression as the climate continues to change.

Roo leads our community food security efforts, building and maintaining strong relationships with campus and community partners working on food security initiatives. They distribute DCF's harvest  both within the Durham community and on campus, ensuring fresh, local food reaches those who need it most. They work with our community partners to identify local assets, assess produce needs, and work with our Field Education Manager to incorporate what we learn and increase impact.

When Roo isn't out in the community streamlining food system processes or working up a sweat in the field, you can find them at a Durham Bulls game on dollar dog night or trying out all the ice cream spots in the Research Triangle area.
